Speaking before Wednesday's Champions League game against Atletico Madrid, the 27 year-old Argentinian said he is "very sad" not to have been offered fresh terms, and admitted he had "options" to leave in the summer.

"I received the news that the club was not in a position to offer me a new contract which," he said.

He joined from Brighton in June 2023 on a five-year deal with two years still to run.

This year he has watched teammates Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch extend theirs, after Curtis Jones' £30m move away from Anfield.

"I see Dominik and Ryan renewing their contracts and that makes me very happy because they deserve it," said Mac Allister.

"At the same time it makes me a little bit sad that I didn't get mine. Of course, there is still time."

The 2022 World Cup winner, linked with Manchester City's spending on midfielders, said he had no direct contact with Liverpool over the decision.

"We won a Premier League together, we went through difficult times together and I always give my best so we will see what happens," added the midfielder.

He was central to the 2024-25 title win but conceded that "it wasn't a good season for me individually and for us as a team" as Liverpool finished fifth and sacked Arne Slot.

His message to supporters was blunt: "The fans don't need to worry because I will give my 100% until the last day I am here."
