Well he did support them as a boy.

When Jamie Carragher tweeted images of himself at Everton’s Finch Farm training complex adorned in Toffees’ official merchandise a few weeks ago, it caused a bit of a brouhaha on social media to say the least.

He was there to interview the Premier League’s most lethal striker in Romelu Lukaku, but some Liverpool fans didn’t understand why he had to do it wearing ‘Bluenose’ gear…

…but then when news emerged some days later that Lukaku wasn’t prepared to sign a new contract at Goodison Park, it all started to make sense. Agent Carragher had played a blinder and his mission was complete.

But joking aside, there’s a very simple reason why the famous Redman was wearing blue for the day – because he didn’t really have an option. Speaking exclusively to Grand Old Team TV, Carragher explains that he had no kit of his own because of the short notice of the interview/finishing masterclass, and so Everton man Tony Sage sorted him out with home colours:

“I was actually doing Monday Night Football the night before, and only got told on the Monday [about the interview], so I went there and had nothing – no boots or kit or anything.

“I know the [Everton] kit man Tony Sage – I’ve known him for a long time -and I text him on the way and said: ‘Have you got any kit or boots I can throw on?’ And obviously he got me all the Everton gear didn’t he!

“So I threw it on, and it didn’t bother me in all honesty – I was doing it for a bit of a laugh to get people talking about the interview.”

It’s part of the first half of an excellent interview with Grand Old Team, in which Carragher also explains his gradual transition from boyhood Everton fan to committed Liverpool stalwart. Fascinating stuff and we can’t wait for part two…
