Messi doing Messi things
Lionel Messi marked his Inter Miami debut in style with a ridiculous 94th minute winner against Cruz Azul on Friday.
Messi finally made his first appearance for his new club since signing from Paris Saint-Germain and his first game in Inter Miami colours was met with a sell-out crowd that included the likes of Serena Williams and Kim Kardashian.
The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner started the game on the bench and saw his new side go 1-0 up, courtesy of Robert Taylor’s excellent opener before Cruz Azul equalised via Uriel Antuna.
However when called upon, Messi delivered in true Messi style as he stepped up to take a free kick on the edge of the box before curling it over the wall to send the DRV PNK Stadium into pandemonium.
Speaking after the game, Messi told reporters: “What I saw was the goal. I saw the goal. I knew that I had to score.
“It was the last play of the game and I wanted to score so I didn’t go to penalties.”
Joining Messi at Inter Miami is his former Barcelona coach Tata Martino, who just recently succeeded Phil Neville.
Having previously won an MLS title at Atlanta, its hoped that Martino knowledge of the league coupled with Messi’s talent can help drag Miami from bottom of the table to play-off contenders.
Martino himself reflected on Messi’s contribution after the game, saying;
“It’s a move that we have seen before”.
