Leeds and Burnley drop complaint over Everton’s transfer spending after being given assurances

The two clubs have received assurances that Everton complied with spending rules

Burnley and Leeds United have dropped their complaint about Everton’s transfer spending after both clubs were given assurances the Toffees complied with rules.

In May, both clubs wrote to the Premier League asking for clarity on Everton’s financial situation after the Merseyside outfit posted losses of £371.8million over three years.

League rules state that top-flight sides are allowed to lose a maximum of £105m over three years, but covid related losses can be written off.

Everton attributed £170m to the pandemic in their latest accounts, which, as noted by Burnley and Leeds, was significantly more than several other clubs in the division.

The two clubs then wrote to the Premier League once again to request that Everton were contacted and told to preserve all data and documents relating to income, transfers and commercial deals.

Premier League provide evidence of Everton complying with guidelines

As reported by the Daily Mail, the Premier League has since provided Leeds and Burnley with further details of how the Toffees have complied with the league’s guidelines. A lot of their spending is exempt from the limits due to allowances made for ‘investment in infrastructure’ and losses from the covid pandemic.

Given that Leeds ensured their Premier League survival on the final day of the season, with Burnley relegated to the Championship, it is somewhat understandable that the Yorkshire club wanted to avoid a potentially lengthy legal dispute.

However, the Whites did only make the decision to withdraw after receiving additional information from the Premier League.

Burnley and Leeds’ request for an independent inquiry into the Premier League’s enforcement of their spending rules has also been dropped by both clubs.
