Independiente forward Leandro Fernandez had a fish thrown at his face during a Primera Division game, forcing him to receive medial attention.

The Argentine was carried off on a stretcher and checked by the club’s medical team after an opposition fan launched a raw fish at his face. He was later deemed fit enough to continue playing in the crucial match against bitter rivals Racing Club.

Fernandez came off the bench during the first half of their Primera Division game, however, he made headlines for the wrong reasons.

Understandably, the 31-year-old will not have expected to go viral for being hit in the face with a raw fish while playing football, and yet, he has.

The striker was stretchered off the pitch

The incident occurred shortly after the second half started, and it is thought that the animal was thrown by a Racing Club supporter.

After being hit on the left side of his face, Fernandez immediately dropped to the ground, clutching his cheek. Following this, a medical cart – equipped with a stretcher – came on to the pitch.

The forward was then stretchered off the pitch and subject to several more checks with the club’s medical team. However, he was deemed fit enough to continue playing and returned to the pitch to finish the second half of the match.

Despite his return to the field, Fernandez was unable to impact the tie as Independiente lost the Primera Division game against Racing Club.

Gabriel Hauche bagged in the ninth minute, with Racing Club securing a 1-0 lead over their rivals.
