Lazar Markovic completes late, late deadline day move to Fulham

Simon Lloyd

The deal was confirmed 90 minutes after the transfer window closed

Lazar Markovic has finally left Liverpool on a free transfer, completing a late move to Fulham on deadline day.

The Serbian winger’s move to Craven Cottage was only announced an hour and a half after the window had officially closed to English clubs on Thursday night, the submission of a deal sheet shortly before the 11pm cut-off point giving Fulham enough time to finalise the deal.

Markovic arrived at Anfield from Benfica in a £20m deal in 2014. He struggled to hold down a regular starting berth for the club – the majority of his time as a Liverpool player spent out on loan with the likes of Fenerbahce, Sporting Lisbon, Hull and Anderlecht.

The 24-year-old, who made just 34 appearances for Liverpool, is believed to have joined Fulham until the end of the season. His arrival coincides with the departure of Aboubakar Kamara, who left for Turkish club Yeni Malatyaspor on loan. The French striker was arrested at Fulham’s training ground in January on suspicion of actual bodily harm and criminal damage.

Markovic will join his Serbian international teammate Aleksandar Mitrovic at Fulham. The former Newcastle striker is said to have recommended him to the club.
