This is admirable commitment from Juan Mata

Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata reportedly turned down an offer €20 million per-year to stay at Old Trafford and compete for a place at the club.

According to reports in Spanish publication AS, the 32-year-old rejected an approach from an unnamed Saudi club to move during the transfer window, choosing instead to remain in the Premier League.

The report says that Mata wants to fulfil contract and, optimistic at United’s planning, believes the club can compete for a trophy this season.

Mata, who earns a reported £160,000 per-week at Old Trafford, has fallen well down the pecking order at United, where he is mainly used for Carabao Cup games, and occasionally as a substitute in Premier League and European matches.

So far this season he is yet to appear in a Premier League match, making two League Cup appearances against Brighton and Hove Albion and Luton Town.

Mata finds himself behind the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Mason Greenwood in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s thinking at the club. Both players finished last season incredibly strongly, though like the team in general, have not yet impressed this term.

United find themselves 16th in the Premier League table after three games, losing two and winning just one. Their last league match before the international break saw them lose 6-1 at home to Tottenham Hotspur, their worst home defeat since losing to Manchester City by the same score in 2011.
