Jose Mourinho’s reaction to Ashley Young’s free-kick said it all

Wow

Robert Redmond

Ashley Young’s quest for Ballon d’Or glory took another step on Tuesday night.

The Manchester United wing-back scored twice in the first-half of the game with Watford at Vicarage Road, helping Jose Mourinho’s team race into a 3-0 lead. Anthony Martial got the other goal for United, but it was all about his teammate.

Not only did Young score two brilliant goals, the world’s greatest footballer also celebrated against his old team, foregoing the most annoying act in modern football – when a player refuses to celebrate scoring against his former team.

Young opened the scoring with an excellent strike against the club where he began his career. Jesse Lingard laid a pass off to his teammate on the edge of the box and Young smashed the ball past Heurelho Gomes with a powerful first-time strike. It came out of nothing and was an impressive way to end an 18-month goal drought, but was nothing compared to his second goal of the night – a free-kick from 25 f****** yards.

Young curled the ball beyond Gomes into the top corner. It was a perfect free-kick, the type United fans used to see David Beckham dispatch on a regular basis. Except it was by Ashley Young and absolutely no-one expected it to go in – including Mourinho.
