Jesse Lingard’s horrendous last-gasp error sees Man Utd lose to Young Boys

Lingard’s error saw United lose with the last kick of the game

Manchester United made a nightmarish start to their Champions League campaign in Switzerland on Tuesday night, going down 2-1 to Young Boys in the Wankdorf Stadium.

United appeared set for a straightforward three points when Cristiano Ronaldo, following on from his two goals at the weekend, gave them an early lead.

But the game turned ten minutes from half-time. In attempt to atone for a poor first touch, Aaron Wan Bissaka went over the ball in his attempts to win a challenge, enough for him to be shown a red card.

Young Boys dominated the second half, and deservedly equalised midway through it when Moumu Ngamaleu prodded home from close range.

United’s defence remained under pressure for the remainder of the game, but appeared to have done enough to leave the Swiss capital with a point when they won back possession in their own half in the closing seconds of injury time.

This was not to be. Jesse Lingard, having replaced Ronaldo earlier in the half, played a blind pass back towards David De Gea, not seeing Theoson Siebatcheu, who was presented with a one-on-one with the United goalkeeper.

He slotted the ball home to give the Swiss side a famous victory, competing a miserable start to United’s Champions League campaign.
