For all the grief he gets, James McClean has never shied away from helping out the less fortunate.

Whether it is fulfilling a promise to ailing youngsters or giving back to his local community, the West Brom midfielder isn’t afraid to go that extra mile.

McClean joined with former Derry City striker Vincent Sweeney in donating ‘a significant amount’ of money to a charity that helps homeless men and women dependent on alcohol in McClean’s native city.

According to The Derry Journal, the former team-mates donated money to the House in the Wells and Foyle Valley House, which are both managed by Apex Housing Association.

Writing on his Facebook page to raise awareness of the charity, Sweeney stated:

“Thanks to James McClean for joining together with me to make a donation to The House in the Wells and Foyle Valley House. I hope that a few of you may also give what you can to this worthy cause.

“Christmas is such an important time to help others who are less fortunate than you – no one knows what’s around the corner. I wanted to make sure everyone gets a Christmas dinner and has somewhere warm to go on Christmas Day.

“I know there are a lot of people in need so we all need to do what we can to help the people of our town.”

Top marks to both men.
