Inter goalkeeper howler might have handed title to AC Milan

Italian football has its Peter Enckelman moment (sort of)

Spare a thought for poor Ionut Radu. In just his second appearance for Inter Milan, the goalkeeper might just have gifted AC Milan the league title after a calamitous late error against Bologna.

The Romanian’s attempt to play a simple first-time pass to Danilo D’Ambrosio went disastrously wrong as he took his eye off the ball and missed it, presenting Nicola Sansone with the easiest goal he will ever score.

Inter blow chance to go top of Serie A

Inter had originally been down to make the trip to Bologna in January, only for the game to be postponed due to a Covid-19 outbreak in their opponent’s squad at the time.

The game rescheduled for Wednesday night, Simone Inzaghi’s side knew a win would take them back to the Serie A summit with four games left to play – leapfrogging their Milanese neighbours at the top in the process.

Ivan Perisic’s opener after three minutes got the reigning Italian champions off to the perfect start but Bologna drew level inside half an hour through Marko Arnautovic.

Radu’s howler

That’s how things remained until inside the final ten minutes, when Perisic decided to send a throw-in deep inside his own half towards his goalkeeper.

Resisting the urge to thump the ball downfield, Radu decided to sweep a pass to his right, to D’Ambrosio. Missing it completely, the ball rolled towards the goal line, where Sansone prodded home what proved to be the winner for Bologna.

Milan lead the way with four games to play

The result means Milan, who beat Lazio with a last-gasp winner in Rome at the weekend, remain two points clear of Inter. They host Fiorentina at San Siro at the weekend, with Inter on the road again, this time against Udinese.
