Howard Webb does his best Bane impression during Burnley vs Man City

Bane of his life

No need to apologise – if anything it was more insightful.

Howard Webb is a respected authority when it comes to officiating football games, although we’re not entirely sure how much he contributes as a pundit on the telly. A lot of the time he just seems to be reiterate when we’ve seen with our own eyes.

More often than not, he just ends up agreeing with the match referee’s decision, or telling us that the official was wrong when that’s obviously the case. Perhaps with that in mind, the producers at BT Sport decided to mix things up a little.

Within minutes of kick-off at Turf Moor, and before they eventually took the lead, Burnley were denied a penalty against visitors Manchester City. It certainly looks like a foul when Otamendi barged into the back of Irishman Jeff Hendrick.

No foul was given by Andre Marriner, as he waved play-on despite protestations. It wasn’t long before Webb was called into action to give his expert opinion on the contentious decision. And what an opinion it was.

Whether it was a dodgy mic or the ex-ref had decided to become Batman’s arch-nemesis, the 45-year-old did his very best Bane impression with a garbled response that sounded like he was speaking through cupped hands.

It was probably his most engaging piece of commentary of the season, and we don’t think it’s a coincidence that Webb happens to resemble Tom Hardy’s character from The Dark Knight Rises. As Bane would say: “adff lafjaslfj afljsalfdjsldfj afadf ajfljf”.
