The game was broadcast on ITV, but the BBC quickly followed with their highlights package on Match of the Day and the studio were dumbstruck trying to make sense of it all.
Alan Shearer didn't hold back in his criticism, calling it "the worst performance I have ever seen from an England team. Ever."
But just before the former Newcastle man started his destruction of the English performance, Match of the Day host Gary Lineker appeared to be so tongue-tied by the shock result that he forgot just who England had actually lost to.
As the camera panned down and Lineker addressed the nation, he took time to congratulate Ireland on their win.
We're sure the Icelanders won't care too much. They're off to the quarter-finals anyway.
