Forgotten Liverpool defender set for first action in 19 months

Remember him?

Kevin McGillicuddy

Jon Flanagan’s nickname was the ‘Scouse Cafu’ if we are correct when he got a sustained run in the Liverpool team during the 2013/14 season.

The right-back however has been missing in action for the last 19 months after a succession of injuries as well as botched recovery stalled his Liverpool career.

Flanagan has been left frustrated as two operations on his left knee left him out of action since he played for Liverpool’s first team on the final day of the 2013/14 season in a win over Newcastle at Anfield.

He suffered a knee injury that summer and went for surgery in September, with a further operation following complications with knee cartilage in April of this year.

He has a current deal that will keep him at the club until the summer, but according to the Liverpool Echo, will finally get on a football pitch again on Tuesday afternoon when he lines out for the club’s U21s against Fleetwood Town.

Considering Liverpool are so short of options at the back, Flanagan’s return could not come at a better time for Jurgen Klopp.
