Mazzarri only signed a new deal back in September, 2021 however it emerged that there was a clause inserted into his contract to compensate for certain events that could occur. As per Sport Italia, although the 60-year-old has been sacked, the clause stated that he will have his contracted extended until 2024 should he be relinquished of his duties while Cagliari were not in the bottom three. They said: "The #Cagliari exempts #Mazzarri but in the market paradox extends the contract until 2024. With the exemption and the team not in the last three positions, the renewal is activated. Cagliari are currently sitting just above the relegation zone and have three games of their season remaining.
