A really bizarre contact clause

Walter Mazzarri has been sacked by Cagliari, however due to a bizarre clause in his contract, has also had his deal extended until 2024.

Reports in Italy have said that Mazzarri has been relieved of his duties with just three games of the Serie A season as Cagliari fight to avoid the drop.

The club themselves have yet to officially confirm the former Watford and Inter Milan tactician’s departure, but the Sardinians already reportedly  have his replacement sounded out, with Primavera coach Alessandro Agostini the favoured candidate to take over.

Mazzarri only signed a new deal in September, 2021

Mazzarri only signed a new deal back in September, 2021 however it emerged that there was a clause inserted into his contract to compensate for certain events that could occur.

As per Sport Italia, although the 60-year-old has been sacked, the clause stated that he will have his contracted extended until 2024 should he be relinquished of his duties while Cagliari were not in the bottom three.

They said: “The #Cagliari exempts #Mazzarri but in the market paradox extends the contract until 2024. With the exemption and the team not in the last three positions, the renewal is activated. For the bench, the only solution is #Agostini.”

It seems unlikely that Mazzarri will return to the dugout despite the renewal and the experienced coach is likely to receiving a huge pay-out, but stranger things have happened.

Cagliari are currently sitting just above the relegation zone and have three games of their season remaining. They face Salernitana, Inter Milan and Venezia – two of those three are also embroiled in the relegation battle with Cagliari.
