Suárez has been linked with a return to his former club

20,000 Nacional fans have tried their best to convince legendary striker Luis Suárez to return to the club where his career began by wearing masks to their most recent fixture.

Suárez is currently a free agent after leaving Atletico Madrid in the summer and reports in Uruguay have linked the forward with an emotional return to the club.

The 35-year-old is said to be in talks over a short-term deal which will seem him stay until the start of the World Cup at least, before leading his country in Qatar.

A social media campaign, known as #SuarezANacional, was started by the club before it spread wide as the club do their best to convince the ex-Liverpool man to return.

Just hours later a large number of Suárez masks were produced while the rest of the fans held up banners with the message during their Primera Division home game against Cerrito on Thursday.

Fans used the ninth minute – marking the number Suárez wore at Barcelona and Atletico –  to pay homage to the forward with chants of ‘Ole, ole, ole, ole, Lucho, Lucho.’

Suárez linked with Bundesliga giants

Suárez came through the ranks as an 18-year-old, scoring 12 goals in 27 games and helping them to win the Uruguayan top-flight title before moving to the Netherlands with FC Groningen

No deal has been completed as of yet and the forward isn’t short of suitors as well. Borussia Dortmund are rumoured to be contemplating a move to find a temporary replacement for Sebastian Haller, who was forced to leave the club’s training camp after a testicular tumour was discovered.
