Roy Keane's long-time criticism of Bruno Fernandes reached new heights earlier this month.
The Irishman was speaking on Sky Sports' Stick to Football when he called out the Manchester United star, after he had broken the Premier League assist record with 21.
Keane felt that the Red Devils captain was more interested in personal accolades over his team's needs.
He said: "After the game, he was interviewed, and the captain of Manchester United said, ‘A few times, I probably should have… shot, but I made the passes'.
"Wow. How can your mindset be not to win the match but to focus on an individual record?"
However, Keane had completely misquoted the midfielder, who had actually said that he shot too much and should have passed more.
Fernandes has now responded to the situation, and revealed on the The Diary Of A CEO podcast the he actually tried to get in contact with Keane.
He said: I've always said I don't mind criticism. I've always taken criticism from everyone and anyone and I've never replied whatsoever. People have an opinion, they can think it's good, bad, or whatever.
What I don't like is when people lie about things. In this case what you said about Roy Keane, basically what he said is a lie.
Luckily for me everything is on record. Imagine if it wasn't, people will think 'Bruno is the guy always going for the assists'.
I even asked Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] for his number to text him to be honest, to have a word with him.
I don't mind the criticism, I don't like when people lie about things that I say. This goes a little bit over the top of things that I think are acceptable.
