Paul Pogba has been placed under police protection in Italy.

The Athletic have reported that the Juventus midfielder has been placed under protection following the ongoing situation with his brother, Mathias.

Mathis was charged and detained on Sunday, with his lawyer Yassine Bouzrou confirming they had plans to appeal the decision.

“We are contesting this decision and everything will be done to ensure that Mr Pogba is released quickly,” he told Le Monde.

It follows after the 32-year-old handed himself into police on Wednesday (September 14)  and was taken into custody.

Paul has been at the centre of an alleged extortion attempt after his brother posted a video to social media last month in which he claimed he had nearly died because of Paul and that he had “lied to the police” and was “pretending” to be innocent.

Mathias also promised to publish “great revelations” about his sibling, which would change people’s perceptions of him.

“The French, English, Italian and Spanish public, as well as my brother’s fans — and even more so the French team and Juventus, my brother’s teammates and his sponsors — deserve to know certain things.

“In order to make an informed decision if he deserves the admiration, respect and love of the public.

“Whether he deserves his place in the French team and the honour of playing in the World Cup. If he deserves to be a starter at Juventus.

“If he is a trustworthy person, that any player would want to have at his side.”

Prosecutors in Paris opened a judicial investigation last month after the former Manchester United midfielder claimed he was the target of extortion and threats from an organised gang.

Paul filed a complaint with prosecutors in Turin, Italy, on July 16 of this year and told them that he was the victim of a €13m blackmail plot.

The 29-year-old also added that he had paid £85,000 (€100,000) to the organised group, who are a number of childhood friends, in the spring.

The France international is currently out injured and is yet to make his competitive debut for the Serie A side since returning to the club.

Pogba is hoping to return to action in time for the World Cup to help his nation defend their crown, but there remains doubts over whether he will recover in time from surgery.
