Egypt recently failed to qualify for the World Cup
Mohamed Salah has been accused of 'not doing anything' for the Egyptian national team by their former coach, Hassan Shehata, in a damning assessment of the Liverpool star.
Salah wasn't able to help guide his side to the World Cup in Qatar after losing their play-off against Senegal, when he missed the deciding penalty.
The forward also get Egypt over the line in their Africa Cup of Nations campaign either, losing to Senegal once again.
At club level Salah has enjoyed a successful period - winning all four domestic trophies and a Champions League title in his time at Anfield - and Shehata feels that the 30-year-old needs to do more to help his country.
"Salah is a great player, he's done so much abroad and he's one of the world's biggest stars but he didn't do anything for the Egyptian national team, he should have done more," he told Egyptian TV.
Salah has hinted at international retirement before
Salah has scored 45 goals in 83 national appearances for the Pharaohs and has previously hinted at retiring from international football after Egypt's AFCON defeat.
He said: "I played for some time with the previous generation, with Wael Gomaa and Mohamed Abu Trika, then Abdullah Al-Saeed and his generation, but I'm happy with the current generation.
"I am proud to play with you and it was an honour for me, and what happened cannot be interfered with by anyone because for the second time it is a penalty shootout (after the AFCON final).
"I am honoured that I played with you and I am very proud to play with you whether I am with you or not in the future."
Salah is still currently locked in negotiations with Liverpool over a new contract. The 30-year-old's deal runs out in 2023 and there have been no signs to suggest he will agree to an extension as of yet.
