The 36-year-old has since undergone the surgery three times and now has a facial scar as a result of the operation.
With 113 international appearances to his name, Neuer is still regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world however given his age and experience, Qatar could well be his last World Cup.
He is also one of the most successful goalkeepers in history having won the World Cup with Germany in 2014, the Bundesliga for the past 10 years in a row and two Champions League titles.
Neuer featured in Bayern's opening nine games of the season before suffering a shoulder injury, which has kept him out of action since early October.
