Man United have introduced a 'Ronaldo rule' so that nobody at the club is paid a significant amount more than their teammates. The Daily Mail have revealed that salaries will be capped at £200,000 a week which will affect some of the playing squad already. David De Gea's current contract is £375,000 a week, however as his deal runs out in the summer, any negotiations will see the Spaniard take a pay cut. De Gea has been given a 'take it or leave it' offer and should he agree, he will be earning roughly the same amount as Bruno Fernandes. Senior names such as Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire, Casemiro and Fernandes all earn anywhere between £180,000 to £200,000 a week, with penalties in place if they fail to qualify for the Champions League.

Similarly to De Gea, Luke Shaw has also been offered new terms in line with the new structure as his current contract runs out in 2024. Marcus Rashford may prove to be a harder person to appeal to however. Paris Saint-Germain have registered their interest in the in-form forward and would be willing to double what he already earns. United's new approach is drastically different to the model they built under previous chief executive Ed Woodward where they would be happy to break the bank in order to attract the biggest stars. Manager Erik ten Hag has opted to bring in the unwritten rule in order to ensure that the team harmony inside the dressing room remains intact amid concerns that players aren't left feeling jealous by what others earn. Cristiano Ronaldo's departure has saved the club more than £20m a year but they must still be cautious about what they spend in order to not break financial fair play rules. Related links:
