However ever since joining Paris-Saint Germain, speculation about a return to the Camp Nou has never been far away.
Now transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has shared comments made by Laporta via Sport in which the president says that the door is always open for Messi to return.
He said: "Messi's return to Barça in 2023? Messi knows that at Barça, he’ll be at home.."

But when pressed for answer, Laporta insisted that the Catalan club are always looking for ways to strengthen their squad.
"In the summer we made a plan and practically all the objectives that we had set for ourselves were achieved. We have a more competitive and compensated team than last season," he added.
"We are constantly thinking about how to improve it. Injuries have not allowed us to see the potential that this team has with the signings."
After reluctantly leaving the club for the French giants, Messi has begun to adapt to life in Paris after a difficult first season.
Under the guidance of new manager Christophe Galtier, the Argentine has helped to form a formidable attacking trio alongside Neymar and Kylian Mbappé.
PSG are currently top of Ligue 1 with Messi contributing heavily. The 35-year-old has seven goals and 10 assists from 12 games this season in the league, and four goals from five Champions League games this campaign.
Messi is now preparing to gear up for what is likely to be his final World Cup with Argentina, where he will look to win the trophy for the first time in his career.
