Joey Barton was spotted amongst Marseille’s fans in the away end at Tottenham on Wednesday night as he watched the French side fall to a 2-0 defeat.

Barton, who played briefly for Marseille during a loan spell in the 2012/2013 season, is popular amongst the supporters after taking to life well on the South Coast of France.

The current Bristol Rovers boss embarrassed himself during that time by conducting a press conference with a French accent before later mocking then-Paris Saint-Germain striker Zlatan Ibrahimović for having a big nose.

Before the game Barton met up with a number of away supporters who had made the trip to north London with those in attendance chanting ‘Barton.’

During his time as a player Barton was never shy of the limelight and continued that tradition in the stands. The former midfielder was seen showing the middle finger to the home fans and joining in several of the chants.

He then posted a message of thanks on Instagram, saying: “Thank you to the supporters of the Olympique Marseille,” he wrote on Instagram. “The best. You made my son and I feel welcome. Always in my heart. Go OM.”

Unfortunately for Barton his presence wasn’t enough to help spur on the French side who were beaten by Antonio Conte’s side after Richarlison’s double gave the hosts a winning start to their Champions League campaign.

The end of the game was marred by ugly scenes in the away end as Marseille fans were spotted clashing amongst each other while another clip showed them pulling down the Pride flag on display at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
