Harry Maguire says he has "no regrets" over his arrest back in 2020. Maguire was found guilty of assaulting up to six police officers before attempting to bribe them in the police station while on holiday on the Greek island of Mykonos. The Manchester United defender received a suspended prison sentence of 21 months in 2020 but launched an appeal which will be heard on the island of Syros. By launching an appeal, it means the England international doesn't have a criminal record against his name unless he is found guilty again in the re-trial. But despite the ongoing conclusion weighing over his head, the 29-year-old insists that he doesn't regret his actions. Speaking to The Times he said: "One thing I would say about Mykonos is that I have no regrets. "I don’t worry about what the outcome is going to be. I don’t worry about anything to do with it because my conscience is so clear about what happened that night. "The people who were there that night, there were nine of us, we all understand what went on and what happened."
Maguire was selected by Gareth Southgate for his 26-man squad for the World Cup, which begins next month. The centre-back has struggled for game time under Erik ten Hag this season, but his impressive performances at international level have earned him a call-up.
Amongst many of the talking points in the build-up to the World Cup is the decision to award Qatar the tournament given their appalling human rights records, which includes the treatment of migrant workers and a ban on same-sex relationships.
The defender said that he was unaware of the issues people faced before but believes the decision to host the tournament in the Gulf State has improved the situation due to the country being in the spotlight.
