A former Liverpool star believes Gareth Southgate is the perfect candidate to replace Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.
Klopp will leave the Reds at the end of the season after nine years at the club and whoever replaces him will have huge shoes to fill.
Xabi Alonso is the reported favourite for the role but Liverpool face competition from Bayern Munich for the highly-rated Spaniard.
Southgate meanwhile is preparing to lead England at Euro 2024 but there has been plenty of gossip suggesting that this tournament may be his last and will step aside and potentially return to club management.
One of the roles the Three Lions boss has been linked with is taking over Erik ten Hag's job at Manchester United however Glen Johnson thinks he is more than capable of succeeding Klopp.
He told Betfred: "It's an awkward one to talk about because you don't want to go into a major tournament speculating about whether England's manager is going elsewhere.
"If he's available in the summer, then you've got to look at all the options. He's done a brilliant job with England, so there's no reason why he can't be successful with a club like Liverpool as he'd be dealing with a similar standard of players.
"You'd need to have the chat because you can't just dismiss him if he's available."
Alonso is the fans' preferred choice to take over and continue the good work done by Klopp and while Johnson agrees to some extent, he believes that someone else needs to come in first.
"I believe somebody needs to come in after Jürgen Klopp and take the bullet first," he added.
"I know that sounds horrible and brutal to say, but there’s no chance of whoever comes in next being better than Jürgen and that’s a testament to the team he’s built at Liverpool."
