They think it's all over

Gottfried Hürst definitely has a ring to it…

Could England’s 1966 World Cup winning legend Sir Geoff Hurst be more German than English? With less than two weeks until the World Cup finals in Russia, Sky Bet is looking for answers.

Using the family history website Ancestry, the bookmaker has partnered with Hurst to uncover the full extent of his English heritage with a full DNA and family history test.

“Many, many years ago I heard of this story from my grandparents on my mother’s side that there was some connection with a German name, a German family called Blick,” Hurst recalls.

“I’m fascinated to see any research that can justify my thoughts.”

If his suspicions are correct it could cast a whole new light on his hat-trick heroics for England against Germany on that glorious day in 1966.

Would England have won? Would they have even made it to the final? Would we have eventually lost the game on penalties instead? Almost definitely.

You can hear it now can’t you, the collective sigh of the nation as commentator Kenneth Wolstenholme shouts, “They think it’s all over, it is now! Blick has won it for Germany!”.

Thankfully regardless of the test results, Germany can never take away our Sir Geoff.

Sky Bet are offering all fans money back as a free bet if the country they back gets knocked out during the tournament.
