Palmer’s late penalty drew Chelsea level

Cole Palmer has recalled the chat he had with Raheem Sterling moments before he equalised for Chelsea.

Palmer and Sterling faced their former club Manchester City on Sunday and were involved in a four-goal thriller as the youngster stepped up from 12 yards in stoppage time to secure a point against the reigning Premier League champions.

Before taking the spot-kick, the 21-year-old revealed that he had received some words of wisdom from his more experienced teammate.

He said: “When I saw the ref give it, I thought … ‘it’s my time’. I spoke to Raz (Sterling) and he said ‘whats happening?’ I was like ‘I wanna take it’. He was like ‘fine’. I felt I was waiting for a while, so I did think about my old club and stuff … (but) when I put the ball down, I just picked a spot and tried to put it there.”

As well as his late goal, Palmer also went viral for trying to listen in to a conversation between his former City teammates before eventually being pushed away by Erling Haaland.

“I didn’t hear anything, I was just having a laugh to be honest, he explained.

“I think Erling [Haaland] found it pretty funny, I don’t think the others did.”

The midfielder’s excellent start to the season has also seen him called up to Gareth Southgate’s squad for England’s games against Malta and North Macedonia.

“I got the message right after the match,” said Palmer. “My phone was going crazy as I have City fans who are my mates. But then I read it (the call-up message) and read it again. It was confirmed. I rang my dad straight away and he was with my mum so I told them. They were buzzing to be honest. It was a proud moment. We were just all buzzing.”
