Ange Postecoglou has sensationally claimed that Spurs aren't a Champions League club.
After an electrifying start to the season, the north London club's form has nosedived since the start of 2024 and barring an almighty collapse from Aston Villa, they will have to settle for fifth place and a Europa League spot.
Despite emphasis on the fact that he thinks Spurs aren't the finished article, the Australian isn't giving up on finishing in the top four.
"I never said I didn't care about finishing top four," he said. "What I said was that finishing top four does not mean we're going to be the team I want us to be next year. That's not what will define us. Finishing fourth and getting into the Champions League does not make you a Champions League club.
"To be at that level requires more than finishing fourth one year. Do I believe right now we're a Champions League club? No, we're not. We've still got work to do. That doesn't mean I don't want us to reach the Champions League."
The odds seem firmly stacked against Postecoglou's men. They have three games left against Burnley, Manchester City and Sheffield United whereas closest competitors Villa only have two games.
Villa are also seven points clear, meaning that a win against Liverpool on Monday would seal their place in Europe's premier competition but Spurs are focused on winning every game - even if it hands rivals Arsenal their first league title in 20 years.
He added: "I don't give up on anything. I'm fighting tooth and nail every single day for everything I can get for this football club because that's my responsibility.
" I want us to finish the season strongly. I want us to try to win three games and see where that takes us. I'd be surprised if anyone in my position at this level will go in with anything other than 100 per cent commitment to fight for everything because if you don't, invariably you fail."
