A police spokesperson told news agency AFP that a "28-year-old man has been arrested", but would not give further information as to the suspect's identity.
The police spokesperson added that the suspect was in custody, although a decision has not been taken on whether or not to release him on bail.
Ajax have so far refused to comment, but Promes was not involved in their usual Sunday training session.
Promes was part of the Ajax squad that was top of the Eredivisie in 2019/20 when the league was voided due to the coronavirus pandemic. They were granted Champions League qualification alongside AZ Alkmaar.
Amsterdam born and bred, Promes joined his hometown club from Sevilla in 2019 for around €15 million.
He briefly played for the Ajax academy as a youngster, but made his breakthrough at FC Twente, where he netted 11 goals in 34 games. A move to Spartak Moscow followed, and Promes' 59 goals in 115 games made him the team's star man. He was was named 2017 Footballer of the Year in Russia.
Promes has made 46 appearances for the Dutch national team since 2014, scoring seven goals.Sport
