It's a long-standing superstition among football fans.

Football fans are convinced that former Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey is linked to the death of Pope Francis.

On Monday, the Vatican announced the death of Pope Francis at the age of 88.

It came after he had spent weeks in hospital with double pneumonia.

However, some football fans believe that his death may have something to do with ex-Wales international Ramsey.

The 'Aaron Ramsey Curse' is based on the idea that when he scores a goal, a notable celebrity dies.

The former Welsh captain scored  79 club goals during his career, along with 21 for his country and in the days following 25 of those goals, a notable celebrity has passed.

Celebs such as Alan Rickman and Steve Jobs have passed following Ramsey finding the back of the net.

Now, fans believe that Pope Francis' has something to do with this alleged 'curse'.

Ramsey was appointed manager of Cardiff City just two days before the pontiff passed.

Football fans were quick to point out the connection online.

One X user wrote: "Aaron Ramsey's first game as manager & the Pope dies. Even in management he still has a curse."

Someone else wrote: "Aaron Ramsey took over as Cardiff City Manager on Friday and now The Pope has died. The Aaron Ramsey curse strikes again."
