Some people genuinely believe the Conor McGregor-Floyd Mayweather fight could happen this August

People are instantly jumping to conclusions...

After a build up that long, it would be remarkable for Conor McGregor vs Floyd Mayweather to be booked this quickly.

If the first thing the first creature to sprout legs and walk the Earth heard was that Conor McGregor was going to box Floyd Mayweather, the little divil might have upped the pace of his crawl to a light jog in excitement.

If the poor sod had been waiting as long as all we have for confirmation of the fight being booked, he would have hastened his pace to a sprint… straight back into the ocean. Homer Simpson put it best, ‘there are no accusations, just friendly crustaceans, under the sea.’

Although it feels like the talk of this diamond-encrusted panty night began at the dawn of life as we know it, that isn’t actually the case. The build-up to this proposed megafight hasn’t actually been going on all that long. It’s just very little progress is being made, at least judging by what the parties involved have been telling us.

So far, the UFC and Conor McGregor have supposedly agreed on terms. Dana White admitted it was everyone but Floyd Mayweather’s fault that booking the fight took so long. The UFC president then confessed that he had not yet sat down with Mayweather two weeks after he promised he would do so. And that’s pretty much where we are right now.

On Monday, a screenshot started doing the rounds that got a lot of people jumping to conclusions about the fight that no one needs to see, but everyone can’t help but watch.

Does this mean Floyd Mayweather is definitely boxing Conor McGregor in the MGM on August 26? No, absolutely not. However, it does mean there’s a chance, although that date seems very close for a prizefight of this magnitude. Although with Canelo vs Golovkin squaring off in September, it is not beyond the realms of possibility that they are aiming to go three weeks earlier to collect that PPV revenue.

Mayweather is a promoter by trade now. He doesn’t just promote himself. Although he would likely load the MayMac undercard with fighters such as Badou Jack and Gervonta Davis, there’s also a possibility that Mayweather Promotions have another event in mind for the MGM in August.

Interestingly, in the early hours of Monday morning, McGregor sent out a tweet teasing his hordes of followers over something ‘BIG’ that’s on the horizon.

#BP? What the hell does that mean?

Boxing promotion? British Petroleum? Bobbi Parka?

Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not.
