“Sean, we hope to see you on the sideline again soon.”

St Peter’s GAA Club in Dunboyne, alongside the family of Sean Cox, have thanked Liverpool, AS Roma and the thousands who’ve sent messages of ongoing support for the Meath native, who remains critically ill after an unprovoked attack outside Anfield Stadium last week.

Cox was viciously assaulted by two AS Roma supporters ahead of last week’s Champions League semi-final. Two Italian men have since been charged over the incident.

A statement was posted by members of St Peter’s to their website on Wednesday afternoon, expressing their sincere thanks to everyone who has sent well wishes.

“The entire St Peters GAA family in Dunboyne would like to extend our thoughts and prayers to Sean for a full recovery,” the statement read.

“We are also thinking of Sean’s family at this difficult time. Sean, a hugely popular and valued community and club leader, is an integral part of life at St Peter’s. Those of us who have the pleasure of working alongside Sean know that his strength and quiet determination are the qualities which will stand him well at this time.

“On behalf of the Club and Sean’s family, we would like to acknowledge the many, many expressions of support from the Dunboyne community and beyond. In particular, we would like to thank our GAA colleagues in Liverpool for their kind offers of assistance to Sean and his family. Sean, we hope to see you on the side line again soon.”

Ahead of their match against Stoke City on Saturday, Liverpool shared an image of their dressing room in which they hung a St Peter’s jersey in support of Sean Cox.

Earlier this week, Roma players also wore ‘Forza Sean’ T-shirts during a training session on Tuesday evening.

Liverpool has since issued advice to fans heading to the second leg of their Champions League semi-final, asking them to comply with a number of safety instructions to the best of their abilities.
