Chelsea manager Emma Hayes in tears after England win Euro 2022

‘Honestly, I can’t find my words. This whole place has exploded’

Chelsea Women manager Emma Hayes was in tears reacting to England’s victory over Germany in the Euro 2022 final at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.

The Lionesses defeated Martina Voss-Tecklenburg’s side 2-1 to lift the Euros trophy, with substitutes Chloe Kelly and Ella Toone scoring for the home nation.

After the match, Hayes were visibly emotional as she reflected on the achievement of the Lionesses and the atmosphere created inside the stadium and throughout the tournament.

Hayes, speaking to ESPN, said: “Honestly, I can’t find my words. This whole place has exploded.

“These amazing players, this amazing atmosphere, I know that everyone has worked hard for a day like today, so I’m just so overwhelmed and proud of everything.

“Listen to this place, it’s absolutely rocking in here!”

Sarina Wiegman’s side took a 1-0 lead over Germany thanks to a second half strike from substitute Toone, who calmly chipped the goalkeeper in the 62nd minute.

However, Germany reacted well and levelled proceedings through Lina Magull in the 79th minute.

The game went to extra time, but it was England who grabbed the winner in the 111th minute through substitute Kelly, who stabbed home from close range to win the final for the Lionesses.

Kelly keen to sing after bagging winner

Goalscorer Kelly provided a memorable interview after scoring the winning goal. After the match, the Manchester City player, Speaking to BBC Sport, began to praise the England fans for their support before she incredibly joined in with the crowd signing Sweet Caroline.

Understandably, she was keen to join in with the celebrations with her teammates, so dropped the microphone and went to join in with the singing.
