EFL planning pro-Ukraine gesture at Carabao Cup final

The Wembley arch could be lit up in yellow and blue

The English Football League (EFL) are discussing the idea of making a ‘gesture’ in support of Ukraine prior to Sunday’s Carabao Cup final between Chelsea and Liverpool, as reported by The Independent.

The report states that one option being discussed is lighting up the Wembley arch in yellow and blue, however, other meetings are scheduled to take place between Friday and Sunday to discuss the topic.

It is thought that some figures involved are keen for a gesture that revolves around a peace symbol instead.

While the idea is currently being discussed within the EFL, The Independent add that the UK government would encourage the move.

The government are aware that the final – a showpiece event with a large global reach – could represent a powerful symbol in support of Ukraine.

However, should the Wembley arch be lit up in the yellow and blue of the Ukrainian flag, there is a slight worry within the EFL about potentially aggravating or alienating a section of the Chelsea fanbase, considering that Blues owner Roman Abramovich is Russian-born.

Although Abramovich is not expected to be in attendance for the Carabao Cup final at the weekend, other members of Chelsea’s Russian-born hierarchy – including club director Marina Granovskaia – will be present at Wembley.

On Friday (February 25), Abramovich’s daughter Sofia has shared anti-Putin and anti-war posts on Instagram following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The 27-year-old voiced her opinion on the current situation, posting an image on her Instagram insisting that the Russian people do not support Russian president Vladimir Putin’s stance on Ukraine.
