Danny Murphy claims Aaron Ramsdale ‘lost the plot’ against Man Utd

‘I think you’re losing the plot a little bit. It’s all a bit for fans’

Danny Murphy has criticised Aaron Ramsdale for the way he celebrated in front of Bruno Fernandes after his penalty miss on Saturday.

With Arsenal leading 2-1 midway through the second half, Nuno Tavares gave away a clear penalty after handling an in-swinging corner.

There was a pause for a VAR check and Fernandes stepped up to take the penalty. Ramsdale was chawing away at the Portuguese international and had to be told to take his place on the goal-line before the kick could be taken.

Fernandes stuttered his run-up and did send Ramsdale the wrong way, only to pull his kick too far to the left. It struck the base of the post and Arsenal were let off the hook.

Ramsdale then delivered an over-the-top celebration right in front of Fernandes after his miss.

Murphy thinks it was ‘a bit for the fans’

However, former Liverpool man Murphy wasn’t impressed with Ramsdale’s antics after the failed spot-kick.

“I always think when you’re getting too emotionally involved you’re detracting from your own performance,” Murphy told talkSPORT.

“When you start getting to the Martin Keown in [Ruud] Van Nistelrooy’s face or Ramsdale jumping out [against United], I think you’re losing the plot a little bit. It’s all a bit for fans.

“I understand it. If I was his manager I’d be saying, ‘Don’t do that again’.

“The best example of reining that emotional aspect of his football is [Jordan] Pickford, that’s why he’s still England No 1.

“If Ramsdale’s got sights on taking over from Pickford at some point… there’s nothing wrong with passion and if you save the penalty I’d understand it. But he didn’t save it.”

Ramsdale channelled his inner Martin Keown

His celebration in front of Fernandes reminded many football fans, and BT Sport commentator Robbie Savage, of former Arsenal defender Martin Keown.

Back in 2003, Keown jostled and jeered Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy after his last-minute penalty miss against the Gunners, at Old Trafford. Lauren and Ray Parlour also shoved van Nistelrooy after his missed spot-kick.
