We suspected this would happen as early as Saturday morning as word got out that the UFC was lining up Max Holloway for an interim title shot against Anthony Pettis as the UFC 206 headliner.
If you are asking why Hollaway vs. Pettis is for an interim title when the UFC has just promoted the interim champion to the outright position, you would have a valid point. It is likely that the promotion need a title fight to serve as the 206 main event.
A fight between the winner of that bout going up against Aldo, in 2017, would settle any doubts over the "undisputed" tag.
McGregor has been completely removed from the UFC's featherweight division on the official site.
Curiously, though, the rankings have yet to be updated following Fight Night 101 so McGregor's reign has continued a while longer.
There is still no official word from the McGregor camp other than a suggestion that The Notorious did not agree to the concept of him "relinquishing" his hard-earned title.
Aldo has hardly crowed about his new position either. He was active on social media last night but there was no mention of the elevation to champ.
