Chris Robshaw to be stripped of England captaincy

Kevin Beirne

The RFU are set to announce Eddie Jones as their new coach in the coming days and big changes are coming.

The Tasmanian is poised to take over from Stuart Lancaster after a disappointing home World Cup in which Jones’s homeland Australia knocked the hosts out after just three games. The move will make Jones the first foreigner to coach the English national team.

His first action as new England coach will be to strip Harlequins flanker Chris Robshaw of the captaincy after a dismal World Cup showing in which the team looked to be lacking in on-field leadership.

Jones has publicly questioned Robshaw’s ability as an international openside flanker in the past. Speaking to Radio 4 after the World Cup, he said: “I just don’t think he’s an openside flanker. He’s more a 6 and a half.

“He’s an excellent player but the first thing you have to do for the captain is to make sure he’s going to be in the team. Can he find his place as blindside flanker? I haven’t been looking at England’s players in depth so I’m really not privy to information on that.”
