Wednesday night sees the final round of the Champions League play-off clashes take place, and by the end of the evening's play, four major European sides will have been eliminated from the continent's premier football competition.
Amongst those vying for a spot in the next round are 15-time champions Real Madrid, who must overcome Benfica in order to compete for a 16th title.
Although they carry a 1-0 advantage from the first leg, last night's shock exit of Inter Milan — at the hands of Norwegian minnows Bodo/Glimt — will be yet another reminder that nothing is assured in the Uefa Champions League, no matter how great the gulf in European pedigree.
Benfica, former champions — in 1961 and 1962— themselves are sure to give Los Blancos as tough a test as Real Madrid are likely to face all season. They also are led by two-time champion manager Jose Mourinho, who knows the Bernabeu inside out from three years there as head coach, in the previous decade.
Aside from the Madrid/ Benfica clash, tonight's match schedule is as follows:
Atalanta vs Borussia Dortmund — 17:45
Paris Saint-Germain vs AS Monaco — 20:00
Juventus vs Galatasaray — 20:00
Real Madrid vs SL Benfica — 20:00
