‘This charlatan needs an autocue because he’s not got a clue who Rangers are’

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has hit out at ‘charlatan’ Boris Johnson after the prime minister delivered a message of support for Rangers ahead of their Europa League final.

Carragher replied to a video message from Johnson’s Twitter account in which he wished Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side luck in their clash against Eintracht Frankfurt in Seville on Wednesday night.

The prime minister – reading from an autocue – said: “I want to wish Rangers the very best of luck in tonight’s Europa League final.

“A lot has happened to the club since you last had a game like this to look forward to. So it’s a fantastic reward for the fans’ dedication, through thick and thin.

“And it’s always great for UK sport, and for the UK as a whole to see our great teams performing on the grandest of stages.

“So whatever happens on the pitch, I couldn’t be happier to see you flying the flag out in Spain. And I know that you’ll do us all proud. Good luck.”

However, Carragher was not convinced by the message. The Sky Sports pundit criticised Johnson, suggesting that he ‘hasn’t got a clue’ who Rangers actually are.

The 44-year-old reacted to the prime minister’s video message on Twitter, writing: “This charlatan needs an autocue because he’s not got a clue who Rangers are & what the Europa League is”, alongside a clown emoji.

Around 100,000 Rangers supporters are expected in Seville for the final, with Glasgow Live reporting that one supporter has been injured following an attack from a number of German ultras, which resulted in five people being arrested.
