Some fans were not happy with the skipper
Manchester United fans have taken to social media to slam Bruno Fernandes as the ‘worst captain in United’s history’.
The Portuguese international was sent off just before half-time for a challenge on James Maddison in United’s game against Tottenham at the weekend.
The Reds were 1-0 down after the third minute. Two minutes into the second half Dejan Kulusevski doubled the visitors lead over a ten-man United before Dominic Solanke made it 3-0.
By full-time, the ground was half empty as Reds fans had seen enough from their team who yet to inspire this season.
Fernandes’ red card was debatable as the Red Devils captain slipped, making the challenge look worse than it was but whether United lodge an appeal is yet to be confirmed.
Nonetheless, fans were fuming that the 30-year-old could be so reckless as the captain was given his marching orders with over 45 minutes left to play.
One fan said: “Bruno is the worst captain, outside of Maguire, in United history.”
While another said: “Bruno Fernandes is the worst captain this club has ever had by some distance. At least Maguire was fully aware that he was s***.”
Fernandes took over the captaincy from Maguire in summer 2023 after the defender struggled for form while he was captain.
A third person declared that Fernandes was worse than his teammate Maguire saying: “Surely at this point it’s nailed on Bruno has been a worse captain for United than Maguire.”
A fourth said: “Is there a more pathetic footballer than Bruno Fernandes, worst captain in football.”
Fernandes has made 242 appearances for the club, scoring 79 goals. He captained the 2023/24 FA Cup winning side, assisting Kobbie Mainoo’s goal as United beat rivals City 2-1 in the final.
Fernandes has won the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award three times since joining the club in 2020.
Meanwhile, despite calls from the fans to sack Erik ten Hag, he will remain in charge for at least the next two games as the hierarchy at the club continues to back him.
