Borussia Monchengladbach defender Jordi Bongard has died aged 20 after he was involved in a fatal traffic accident on Wednesday night.

Bongard was a member of Borussia’s Under-23 side, having worked his way up the age groups after joining the club’s academy at the age of 12.

On Thursday (February 24), the German club confirmed that the young centre-back had tragically lost his life after being involved in a traffic accident the previous night.

Borussia posted a photo of Bongard on Twitter, captioning the post: “Borussia mourns Jordi Bongard. Our U23 player died in a traffic accident last night.

“We express our deepest sympathy to his family and loved ones and wish them strength. Jordi will always be in our thoughts & hearts!”

Following the devastating news of Bongard’s passing, Borussia Monchengladbach announced that the club had cancelled all training sessions and press conferences that were scheduled to be held on Thursday.

Sporting director Roland Virkus said: “We received this terrible news this morning and we are stunned. Our deepest sympathy and our thoughts are with Jordi’s family.”

Bongard signed his first professional contract in July 2021, having scored nine goals in 74 appearances for Borussia’s Under-17, Under-19 and Under-23 sides.

FC Cologne replied to Borussia’s post, saying: “The #effzeh family are shocked and in mourning over Jordi Bongard’s passing. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and everyone at Gladbach in this difficult time.”

Eintracht Frankfurt added: “Our deepest condolences to all his relatives and to Borussia! We send a lot of strength from Frankfurt”.

Arminia Bielefeld wrote: “Our deepest sympathy goes to Jordi’s family and loved ones. We wish them and you a lot of strength!”
