Liverpool youngster scores a screamer on his debut for Wales

He's only 17

He’s only 17.

Ben Woodburn made his debut for Wales as a substitute in the 69th minute on Saturday night against Austria. Four minutes later he’d scored for his country, giving them the lead in a crucial World Cup qualifier.

You couldn’t write it.

Woodburn emerged from the bench as Wales chased victory against Austria in a World Cup qualifier. Chris Coleman’s team reached the semi-finals of the European Championships last summer, but had failed to carry that form into Group D of the campaign to reach Russia.

They were four points adrift of Serbia and the Republic of Ireland coming into Saturday’s game, but finished the day just two points behind Ireland, who could only manage a lacklustre draw with Georgia.

Woodburn’s scored the only goal of the game against Austria, showing his massive potential with an excellent strike from outside the penalty area. The defending wasn’t great, but this was brilliant from the 17-year-old, who is also Liverpool’s youngest-ever goal scorer.

Woodburn’s strike comes a day after Andy Robertson, another Liverpool player, scored a great goal of his own for Scotland.
