Why Aston Villa could pocket £12m for helping Liverpool win Premier League title

Villa can still secure a top-half finish this season

Aston Villa could reportedly earn a £12million windfall if they defeat Manchester City and finish in the top half of the Premier League table at the weekend.

While Steven Gerrard’s side will play a role in which team is crowned Premier League champions on Sunday, there is enough internal motivation for Villa without thinking about helping their manager’s former side, with the chance to still secure a top-half finish.

Should the Midlands outfit defeat Pep Guardiola’s side, and the four teams directly above them lose, they could yet finish in a respectable 10th position after somewhat of an underwhelming campaign.

Villa could pocket £12m for top-half finish

As well as a top-half finish potentially making summer recruitment slightly easier, the financial rewards of doing so are significant. Villa could receive a £12m windfall if results go their way and they finish the season in 10th position, as reported by the Mirror.

For each place in the Premier League table, clubs can receive as much as £3m – which could help Villa to strengthen in the summer as Gerrard looks to guide Villa to a push for Europe next season.

Gerrard’s priority is to ‘try and get points for Aston Villa’

Despite the opportunity to potentially help Liverpool win the Premier League title, Gerrard has insisted that the club’s clash against City holds no extra significance.

“We’ll go out at the weekend and give it everything we’ve got to try and get points for Aston Villa and our supporters,” Gerrard explained.

“If that inevitably helps Liverpool, fantastic. But my priority is to try and get points for Aston Villa.”
