Valencia looks set to reunite with a former teammate

Antonio Valencia looks set to leave Manchester United this summer after he retweeted a post reporting that he had agreed a deal with MLS club DC United. The move will see him reunite with former United teammate Wayne Rooney.

In the screenshotted tweet below, Valencia retweets a post from a fan wishing him well at DC United, after the embedded tweet claimed that one of Rooney or Valencia requested that the Ecuador international joins the American club.

The Manchester United captain has only featured once under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, in a 2-0 away win against Newcastle, since Jose Mourinho was sacked as United boss in December.

During his ten year spell at Old Trafford, Valencia has won two Premier League titles, one FA Cup, two League Cups and a Europa League trophy.

He arrived in the same summer that Cristiano Ronaldo departed for Real Madrid. With big shoes to fill, not everyone was convinced to begin with, but Valencia eventually found his feet and became a key member of the squad.

But he will be 34 by the time next season comes around, and as United look to refresh the squad, that will involve letting players like him go.

Valencia had previously been linked with a move to Inter Milan, but his recent Twitter activity would suggest that he is set to end his career stateside while trying to rekindle the relationship with Wayne Rooney that saw him score so many goals around the turn of the decade.

United have Diogo Dalot patiently waiting in the wings to make the right-back slot his own, but have also reportedly been sniffing around Crystal Palace’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka, whose superhuman tackling has attracted the attention of several big clubs.

Tottenham Hotspur are also reportedly keeping tabs on the 21-year-old as Mauricio Pochettino looks to replace the out-of-form Kieran Trippier in the summer.
