Andy Murray makes history with third BBC SPOTY win

As expected, Andy Murray capped a memorable 2016 by winning the BBC Sports Personality of the Year, becoming the first person to win the award for a third time. The tennis star claimed his second Wimbledon title in the summer and followed this by retaining his Olympic gold medal in the Rio Games. On top of this, he ended the year by overtaking Novak Djokovic at the top of the ATP rankings.
British equestrian Nick Skelton finished in third place, with triathete Alistair Brownlee finishing as runner up.
Murray is currently in Miami as he prepares for the new season, so wasn't able to attend the awards night in Birmingham in person. However, Lennox Lewis was on hand to pass the award over to Murray, who thanked those that voted for him along with his family and support team via live video link.
