Murray admitted before the tournament that it could well be his last
Andy Murray has been eliminated from the Australian Open after a first round defeat to Roberto Bautista Agut.
Murray showed incredible resolve to fight back from two sets down to level the match at 2-2 against the 30-year-old Spaniard in Melbourne, before losing the fifth and final set 6-2.
In a press conference prior to his opening round match on Monday, Murray revealed that recurring hip injuries had left him with no choice but to retire after Wimbledon this summer.
However, when asked by journalists if the Australian Open could be his final appearance on a professional tennis court, Murray admitted that he was unsure if he was capable of playing through the pain in the coming months.
There was a rapturous reception for the three-time Grand Slam champion as he congratulated Bautista Agut on his victory – with his family cheering him from the crowd – and tennis fans will be hoping that they get to see him one last time on Wimbledon’s Centre Court this summer.
