Ander Herrera goes totally OTT in his praise of Wayne Rooney

'The greatest of all time'

Some people can have very short memories, and football fans are some of the worst for amnesia.

But whatever about fans having selective memory, footballer’s should be a bit more considered. Or so you’d think.

Ander Herrera, silky midfielder that he is, clearly has no idea about players from Manchester United’s or England’s history as he pays Wayne Rooney a compliment that seems to be more than a little over the top.

Sure Rooney has been one of United’s best players over the last decade, but his decline has been evident over the last number of seasons as he has struggled for form and fitness.

However speaking after the game the midfielder told ESPN that Wayne Rooney, who had gone 11 months before Saturday without scoring away from home, is pretty much the best player of all time in England.

“Wayne is our leader. He is the best English player in English history and we are lucky to have him. When he fights like he did today we can be very proud of him. He has always helped me a lot.”

Herrera may have been caught up in some kind of post-match afterglow and the hype around Rooney or maybe he got a knock to the head. But we don’t think any Manchester United fan, let alone English fan, would argue he’s been the best player in the history of his club or country.
