Aguero visited the statue at the Etihad on Friday

Manchester City unveiled a statue of Sergio Aguero outside the Etihad Stadium on Friday, but some fans think that it actually looks more like Toni Kroos.

The reigning Premier League champions had the statue created to mark the 10-year anniversary of his famous title-winning goal in 2012.

City released a video on Twitter showing the statue, which depicts Aguero’s iconic pose after scoring the historic goal in the 3-2 win over Queens Park Rangers.

The statue, created by award-winning sculptor Andy Scott, celebrates Aguero’s ‘outstanding contribution to the club’s success, and in particular, his pivotal role in what was arguably one of the greatest moments in sporting history for which he will be eternally remembered by Manchester City fans around the world’, said City.

Aguero visited the statue at the Etihad on Friday, with May 13 marking exactly 10 years since his goal snatched the Premier League title from rivals Manchester United on the final day of the season.

Fans think Aguero’s statue looks like Kroos

In somewhat typical fashion, rival supporters and social media users were quick to joke about the new statute, with several people suggesting that it actually looks more like Real Madrid and Germany midfielder Toni Kroos.

The Athletic‘s Adam Crafton quote-tweeted a post about Aguero visiting his statue, writing: “To look at a statue of… Toni Kroos?”

A Manchester United fan added: “Tears they made Toni Kroos statue”.

Another person said: “Toni Kroos is so good City decided to build a statue for him #HalaMadrid”.

A fourth stated: “That semi final vs real madrid really hurt City bruh. They put up a statue of Toni kroos in front of Etihad”.

Another Twitter user added: “Nice of Man City to commemorate the 10-year anniversary of Aguero scoring the most famous goal in their history by commissioning a statue of Toni Kroos!”

Aguero speaks about ‘moving’ statue

Speaking about his statue, Aguero said: “‘Truthfully, it is a very beautiful thing for me, to see myself 10 years ago is very moving.

“In those 10 years I was able to win a lot of trophies and was able to help the club become one of the most important in the world.

“I am very grateful to the club for making this statue in recognition of my football career in Manchester. It is something very special.”
