A guy you’ve never heard of just won the Puskas Award for this ludicrous goal

Has to be seen to be believed

Rob Burnett

Ever heard of Mohd Faiz Subri?

Of course you haven’t. Because even though you’re a football hipster who can name the Red Star Belgrade reserves back four without even thinking, you haven’t yet cast your eye as far as the Malaysian Super League.

So you won’t know that old Mohd plays for Penang FA, usually as a forward or a winger. His Wikipedia page says he is “also notable for scoring spectacular free kicks.” And how. Take a look at this doozy, which he scored against rival club Pahang FA in a league match in February last year.

See?

And here it is from a couple more angles…

It seems to defy physics as it curls and swerves it’s way past the keeper and into the net.

And for his troubles, Mohd has only gone and won the FIFA Puskas Award for the best goal of the year.

He was in Zurich for the glitzy ceremony and headed up on stage to make his speech as the epxpectant crowd waited… and waited… and waited.

It seems that Mohd had stored his words on his phone, and under the glare of the lights it took him a few moments to find them, while host Eva Longoria awkardly joked he was “looking at his texts”.

Still, if we were getting up to give a speech to millions at an award ceremony in a language that was not our first, we’d want a few seconds to find the ruddy speech on our phone as well.

Well played Mohd.
