Sadiq Khan has called on the government to strengthen its climate action and cut Britain’s reliance on North Sea oil and gas, piling pressure on Andy Burnham as a decision on new drilling looms in the coming weeks.
The London mayor said Andy Burnham's premiership must reaffirm its commitment to net zero and continue reducing reliance on fossil fuels “to get Britain back on track”.
His intervention comes amid a summer of heatwaves and drought across the UK and Europe, with Khan warning of “terrifying scenes” this summer.
There is growing concern among Labour MPs that the new prime minister may back renewed drilling, including the Jackdaw gasfield and the Rosebank oilfield.
Since arriving in No 10, Burnham has stayed largely tight-lipped, saying last month he would be “pragmatic” and that decisions would be made “in due course”.
National governments across the globe must step up and meet the gravity of this moment with renewed focus, funding, and resolve.
Khan made the plea writing in the Guardian, arguing the worsening climate crisis demands urgent action.
A decision on whether to approve more drilling in the North Sea is expected within weeks — a test of how far Burnham will hold to Labour’s manifesto pledge to halt new licences.
